botsin.space has been shut down as of October 29, 2024. The server, which was popular with bot developers and artists, was closed due to increasing operational costs and technical challenges. The administrator cited growing database storage costs (191GB), file bandwidth expenses, and performance issues following recent Mastodon upgrades as key factors in the decision. While the server ran on a “relative shoestring budget” for years, the mounting expenses became unsustainable. The site was switched to read-only mode after December 15th, 2024, and will remain accessible for archiving purposes into March 2025. For more details, see the official announcement.
